Nineteenth Century Studies

Nineteenth Century Studies takes as it focus a period that is central to the formation of modern categories of knowledge and identity. The19th century was marked by the global transformations effected by the Industrial Revolution, the formation of the modern nation state, and the clash of cultures that attended expanding colonial empires and new networks of commerce and exchange. These radical shifts from early modern economies and technologies had profound effects on the social, political and cultural domains, and have left important (and traumatic) legacies for the present. In turn these shifts make the study of discourses and practices in the 19th century---whether in the fields of science, law, the literary or visual arts, or sociology, anthropology or history--mutually interdependent.
